What is an OPI Gel Manicure?

A gel polish manicure uses soak off gel that looks and acts like nail polish, but technically it is gel.  We apply a base coat, 2-3 coats of the colour, then finish with a top coat. Each layer of polish must be cured in a UV or LED lamp. “Cured” basically just means dried.

After the top coat has cured in the lamp a tacky (or inhibition layer) it is wiped off using rubbing alcohol. It’s all a bit scientific, but the main thing is this, a gel polish manicure gives you shiny, chip free wear for 2 weeks. Plus, when the top coat has finished curing, it is complete dry! You do have to wipe off the inhibition layer, but after that your gel manicure is dry and won’t dent or smudge.

How long does OPI Gel Polish last?

OPI Gel Color is a chip resistant gel finish polish, and stays shiny for at least 14 days. Clients usually get between 2 and 3 weeks wear from a gel manicure. The gel factor is what makes the manicure long wearing, and is set by “curing” under an LED light.

Traditional nail polish or nail lacquer dries easily in open air with no assistance, although a hair dryer or other heat source can help the process along. However, standard polish is also prone to chipping, even with a top coat to protect it. Gel nail polish uses a formulation different from that of standard polish. The chemicals in gel nail polish require use of either a UV or LED curing light to cure the polish and its top coat. The result is that gel nail polish lasts much longer than traditional polish and requires a specialised removal process.

How is OPI GelColor Applied?

The application process for any gel nail polish is similar to that of standard nail polish, but it requires certain products that are compatible with the gel polish. Applying OPIGelColor requires a special base coat, color, top coat, and curing light.
